An impressive looking
POISON
or
PERFUME
(?) bottle that has all of the
earmarks of an antique poison bottle, and all the things that make them so collectible today. They were often made in odd shapes, in unusual colors, and / or had fancy or extraordinary embossing patterns on them (as in the embossed knobs covering this bottle
), all things to let a user know, by sight and feel, that the bottle's contents were something not to be consumed.
But
you also do see antique perfume bottles that are vigorously decorated with lots of embossing and designs so that they could be handled safely as the contents was so powerfully concentrated and expensive. It could also be that this was a perfume bottle and the heavy full embossed protrusions were there to give the bottle a fancy ornate shape, easy to handle, reflecting the contents within?
So again, these 'warning protrusions' could of possibly been designed on this bottle for a warning, to repel a user from its contents o
r to the contrary, the embossing could be to attract a person with its fancy ornate design, and for gaining a firm grip on it when handling it.
Then there is the beautiful
purple color ... you hear about old glass turning purple in the sunlight ... ? This beautiful purple amethyst color is the result of this antique bottle being blown with manganese-glass. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. Though some may suggest that this lavender color has been artificially produced or altered if it was purpled by any other source than natural sunlight, the only thing that may be altered is the time it took to turn purple. It really doesn't matter whether an old bottle like this has turned purple by the sun or UV rays in a controlled environment, they all turn the same purple color as it is all the same chemical reaction taking place. But what IS MOST important is the age of this bottle, as with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 has manganese in it and will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking antique bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique!
Whether it be a poison bottle
or
a perfume bottle
, it has all of the right stuff. It is FULLY embossed with a beautiful pattern, and is quite unique in presentation,
